Through some act of twisted fate, I have ended up traveling with a band of fellow prisoners in the Antipodes. They are an... interesting bunch, to say the least.
It's been several months now, and I am coming back to this to reassess my thoughts. If nothing else to see how far we all have come. And to have something written down in case things go horribly wrong in the mines so that there will be something left. I'll be leaving a copy of this page hidden in the penthouse here in the Boneyards. Maybe someone can at least remember us.
Gorudak"Mr. No Fun Allowed", the Warrior Poet
If we did elect a "leader" to this group, this half-orc would probably be it. He's the one that takes charge most often, which is good, as it means he's also the one people swing weapons at first. He's not the best at talking, and he gets distracted far too often looking at people's tits, but he tries. He tries very hard. Almost too hard. Needs to lighten up a little. He still hasn't forgiven me for almost shocking his balls. I'm okay with it, though; it just means I have leverage against him. Seems to have a strange relationship with Varis. They yell at each other constantly, but manage to work together well enough. I can't tell whether they're going to kill each other or bang each other.
Reading over my last entry, I notice that Gorudak has been much, much less distracted by tits these days. He's more focused than ever. He's got his goals and I don't think even the force of nature that is the Dreamer itself will be able to stop him. I'm kind of jealous that he's that sure of himself and of us. That said, he has shown a softer side to us in recent weeks. He's starting to get more comfortable, and even makes a few jokes from time to time. My above entry talked about gaining leverage or some shit against him, and I regret thinking that now. He's too good for that. I don't need any blackmail or manipulation against him; I just need to talk to him openly more. Maybe let my own guard down for once. He is a man I trust with my life, without question.
That said, he's still as dense as lead when it comes to romance. I've lost track as to how many gnomes here have hit on him and he just... doesn't pick up on it. It's kind of amazing, and I'm not about to point any of it out to him. Also, getting him high or drunk is a surefire way to have a great evening. That or a dangerous evening. Or both. We ended up in a car chase with the mafia because this fart got drunk off his ass. I don't even know how it happened, but it did. He also got a tattoo. Apparently a god gave it to him?
To summarize: The most trustworthy person to have walked this planet, and the wildest drunk.
Varis, the Boy of a Billion Fuckwords" The Man of a Million Fuckwords (He's come down a bit)
A drow in name only. Nice kid, but rational thought is not his greatest strength. It's almost impressive how much he can talk at length and not say anything useful. Claims he's an assassin, but he's the loudest being I have ever encountered. Most of his relationships, ours included, revolve around alternatively enjoying his company and/or skills and hitting him to keep him quiet. I think everyone in the group save Naeris has slapped him at one point.
Varis is still the loudest being I have encountered, and he still yells all the fuckworks, but he's come a long way. He's a lot smarter than he lets on, or even lets himself believe. He knows how to focus when the time is right, and he knows when it's time to shut up and get the job done. He still runs off his mouth a lot, but I've been getting better at deciphering what he means by it all. There is a method behind his words; he just needs to work on expressing it better. I believe in him. He's come this far, and I have no doubts that he can continue on, come out from under Ian's shadow, and be his own man. He still struggles a bit with self-confidence, but so long as the rest of us keep supporting him, he'll be alright. He's an integral part of this group and we'd probably be dead without him; he just needs to realize it.
On the other hand, Varis is still really wanting for some "adult" attention. He has a huge Thing for biceps, and he still gets a bit flustered when I walk around half-dressed. It's adorable, and I can't help but want to tease him for it. Maybe I'll give him a surprise hug one of these days and watch him freak out; just because he's growing as a person doesn't mean I can't still mess with him.
To summarize: Still loud, but his heart's in the right place and he's good at what he does.
PS: Varis was acting a lot different after coming out of the Archives. I can only imagine he found something troubling in there, but I should probably wait before trying to find out what it was.
Sweet Bloodthirsty Baby Naeris, #partywraith
When I first met her, I thought Naeris was in the wrong place. There was no way an elf this sweet belonged on a prison transport, but then I saw her fight at the Stormcrusher Manor incident. She started to yell bloody murder and put down dwarves left and right before somehow finding a Stormcrusher heirloom and continuing her rampage from Gorudak's shoulders. It was impressive, and a bit scary. Best to stay on her good side.
Out of everyone, I've learned the least about Naeris since my last entry. She's still the same chipper elf that you don't want to be on the wrong side of. At least, I now know a bit more about why she's like that after listening to her talk about her god. Lilira and her followers don't seem to do things by halves at all. Fight hard, party hard, love hard, all in the name of just having a good time. That's a horrible bastardization of their tenants, I'm sure, but I still have a lot to learn. I just need to talk to her more.
However, I get the feeling that it may be more difficult than simply asking. I didn't notice at first, but after all this time, I can tell there's something eating at her. She's been oddly quiet as of late, and during that whole airing of grievances meeting we had, she opted to not say what she was sent here for. She's trying to hide something, but I don't think it's out of malice. Fear? Regret? I'm not sure. I want to know, but at the same time I shouldn't pry. I want to say it will be better for everyone to be honest and open about these things, but that's just being nosy and selfish. I'm sure she'll tell us in time, and I'll just have to be ready to accept whatever it is.
To summarize: Still a ball of sunshine, but I'm starting to see a sadness about her.
Bowen,Puppy Tamer Extraordinaire Heart of Gold, Abs of Steel
Some sort of hunter or beast tamer. she seems to have some affinity for animals, judging by the fact that within a week after we arrived, she has managed to catch and tame a wild albino dingo. Aside from that, she's one of the more down-to-earth members of the group, sometimes easily distracted. It's strange; sometimes she can see or hear things even the elves can't, and others she misses despite it being right in front of her. Case in point, managing to get lost in the woodlands outpost despite being led, ending up in the kitchen instead of one of the dorm rooms. She also cleans up very nicely. I'm still jealous of that dress she got to wear for the party.
I have never met a person as trusting as Bowen. Someone that nice and trusting should have been swallowed up by the world a long time ago, but somehow it's mostly worked out in her favor? She takes a lot of strange things from Varis without question, and even though one of them turned out to be cursed (despite Malcer's inspection) and another was obviously dangerous, she managed to get some good things out of it. That cursed amulet sure saved my ass in that fight with Larold, and Varis giving her the tarot card let us meet Percy. Either there's something to being so trusting, or she is the luckiest dwarf in existence. Maybe a bit of both. Either way, she's a charm to be around, and a force to be reckoned with if you actually manage to get her angry.
I'm not too sure what to think on her surprise marriage, though. On one hand, drunk marriages are usually doomed from the start, but Richard Gearbox is actually a pretty nice guy and still likes Bowen even after the day was over. I'd encourage her to go after him, if only so she'll have someone to come home to someday, but I can't say how long we'll be gone and it seems like their first date didn't go so well... Alas, romance isn't my field, so I'll just have to trust her to follow her heart and support whatever decision she makes.
To summarize: Too good for this world, too pure. Very thirsty.
Nin, Just Nin. Team Mom
By far the quietest one on the group. Hard to get a read on her. She's slow to rouse, judging by the fact the saw fit to finish her drink before heading in to an ongoing massacre. To be honest, I'm not entirely certain there's a reason she sticks with us. Some shady agenda? Secretly Naeris' long-lost mother? Sheer boredom? It's impossible to tell.
I've been learning a lot about Nin in her dealings with Malcer. I don't know if she knows something I don't, but she really has it out for the guy. I get that he's not the most pleasant person to be around, but Nin has an intense way of showing her displeasure... If nothing else, seeing how she treats him is more or less proof that she likes the rest of us. Their fights are entertaining to watch, but I hope they don't make things more difficult down the line.
Nonetheless, Nin's resting state of distrust is sorely needed. Keeps the rest of us in line when Gorudak can't. I'd probably be doing a lot more stupid things if Nin wasn't there to reign me in. Same with Varis. Especially Varis. Gorudak may be the leader, but it's Nin that keeps us from marching off cliffs. Not that she hasn't done stupid things herself, of course. Covering several city blocks in plants was some way to spend an evening. I didn't know she could even do that...
To summarize: Our grounding force and queen of pettiness.
PS: Starting to regret saying I'd owe Varis and Nin a favor if both kept better control of eating things and drinking, respectively. They are doing a lot better than I thought they would. Not too worried about what Varis would have me do, but Nin is hard to read...
Everyone Else
Butcher Bay
Steady:
Fun little alchemist, though has a seething hatred for Tetra. Still need to get her bomb recipe.
-May be able to improve her bomb recipe with better casing. Maybe shape it so it looks more natural in a bra?
Cary:
Very gay for Steady, but won't admit it. Similar to Gorudak, but a little more well-mannered. In some ways, at least.
-Cary and Steady are dating now. Finally.
Ian:
Varis' dad. I see where Varis got a lot of his... everything. Good chef, too, and an actual loving father most of the time. It's a rare sight.
-Dating Caledon. Cute, but almost annoyingly so.
Celadon Caledon Caladon Kale Chips:
I may be gay as fuck, but this is still the most attractive thing I have ever seen. A perfect everything. Almost too much so. ...Actually, yes. Too much so. Away from the sight of him, something seems kind of off...
-Need to interrogate this guy once we get back. Still feel like there's something we should know that we don't.
Portia:
Strange being. Takes the shape of an old woman, but after our short meeting, I have a sinking feeling that she's a being more influential than even gods. I can't even begin to theorize, and I have a feeling that I would go insane should I ever find the answer. However, she does seem to have her code. A deal must be made, and followed to the letter. A powerful being, but thankfully far enough removed from everyone to not worry about unless we cross her, and I have no intention of doing that. I just need to make sure the others don't try to make a stupid deal.
-Starting to question her motives more. It could be just Malcer's paranoia rubbing off on me, or it could be something a lot worse. Need more information, but getting that will be dangerous.
Wayright:
Ship captain, allergic to shirts. A nice man, and we owe him our lives for letting us escape from being prisoners.
-Had a bit of a scare when he was poisoned in the Stormcrusher incident, but seems to have recovered.
Desna:
We really made a mess of that party. Wish we could have done more, but it's too late to think about what could have been. Note to self: Don't take on criminal investigations anymore. Not worth the hassle.
-She's been through a lot recently. I hope Gorudak getting her pardoned helps her out a little.
Malcer:
Possibly my biggest unknown at this point. He obviously hails from a noble background and has all the ambitions to match. It's clear he's helping us, but I still can't get a read on what his motives are. He said himself that he has selfish reasons for it, but I don't know if I should take solace in the fact he's open about it or worry when his goals stop aligning with ours. Nothing to do about it now, though. He's the one that can use the sextant, so for better or for worse we're relying on him for the moment. I may try to get him in private. He might be more open to talking then. Even if I don't touch the subject of why he's with us, I feel there's stuff to be learned.
I want to trust him, but he makes it difficult.
Boneyards
Tidus Wobblesprocket:
Head honcho of the Boneyards. Seems like a nice guy but a lot of information about him doesn't add up at all. Something shady's going on, and I want to know. Whether or not I actually put a stop to it, however, depends on what he's been doing.
Dr Hope Payne:
One of the local doctors, mother of Cassidy. May be Steady's mother, but I can't be certain. Will have to look into this more once we get back to Butcher Bay.
"Larold":
Our main obstacle at the moment. Some ooze monster in human form. Can regenerate if killed. Need to find method to deal with him permanently, as well as the rats he seems to have under his thumb.
Richard Gearbox:
Bowen's husband? Nice guy, but I kind of feel bad for him and Bowen, knowing that them being together will be difficult without a long-distance relationship unless one or both of them makes major sacrifices.
"Percy":
An entity with a ram's skull that started appearing to Varis, Bowen and me in dreams. His motivations are unknown, but it's clear he wants us to succeed in what we're doing. Malcer is vehemently against listening to him or doing anything he says, but I feel this is one of the better leads we have. If we can just find a way to communicate with him better, I'd be more certain one way or the other, but as it stands helping him out could either be our best bet or the death of us all. I still intend to play his game, but I need him to tip his hand before it's too late. Hopefully I can think of something.
